چکیده
Definition Leukoplakia is the most common premalignant or "potentially malignant" lesion of the oral mucosa. Leukoplakia is a predominantly white lesion of the oral mucosa than cannot be clinicopathologically characterized as any other definable lesion. The term leukoplakia is a clinical descriptor only and should not be used once histological information is available. On the other hand, the terms keratosis and dyskeratosis are histological features and should not be used as clinical terms. Based on clinical examinations a provisional diagnosis of leukoplakia is made when the lesion cannot be clearly diagnosed as any other disease of the oral mucosa with a white appearance. A definitive diagnosis is made as a result of the identification, and if possible elimination, of suspected etiological factors and, in the case of persistent lesions, histopathological examination confirm the diagnosis.

Association of Human Papilloma Virus 16 Infection and p53 Polymorphism among Tobacco using Oral Leukoplakia Patients: A Clinicopathologic and Genotypic Study
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) and p53 alterations are speculated to play a role in carcinogenesis. This study was carried out to find out the association of HPV and p53 with precancerous lesions of the oral cavity such as leukoplakia: The objective of this study was to find the association among human papilloma virus (HPV) 16 infections and p53 polymorphism in tobacco using the oral leu...
متن کاملProliferative verrucous leukoplakia: A case report with emphasis on diagnosis and treatment
Hansen et al. (1985) described proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) as a distinct entity of leukoplakia, presenting as verrucous, or exophytic lesion with progressive histological changes in sequential biopsies such as hyperkeratosis, different grades of dysplasia, verrucous carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) [1]. In 2005, the WHO defined PVL as a rare subtype of oral leukoplakia...
متن کاملGenotyping Candida albicans from Candida Leukoplakia and Non-Candida Leukoplakia Shows No Enrichment of Multilocus Sequence Typing Clades but Enrichment of ABC Genotype C in Candida Leukoplakia
Oral leukoplakias are histopathologically-diagnosed as Candida leukoplakia or non-Candida leukoplakia by the presence or absence of hyphae in the superficial epithelium. Candida leukoplakia lesions have significantly increased malignant potential. Candida albicans is the most prevalent fungal species associated with oral leukoplakia and may contribute to malignant transformation of Candida leuk...
متن کاملDifferences in gene expression profile between vocal cord Leukoplakia and normal larynx mucosa by gene chip
BACKGROUND Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in tumorigenesis. Vocal cord leukoplakia is a precancerous lesion in otolaryngological practice. Till now, the expression patterns and functions of lncRNAs in vocal cord leukoplakia have not been well understood. In this study, we used microarrays to investigate the aberrantly expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs in vocal cord leukoplakia ...
متن کاملOral leukoplakia, the ongoing discussion on definition and terminology
In the past decades several definitions of oral leukoplakia have been proposed, the last one, being authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO), dating from 2005. In the present treatise an adjustment of that definition and the 1978 WHO definition is suggested, being : "A predominantly white patch or plaque that cannot be characterized clinically or pathologically as any other disorder; o...
